Portion of email from Steve Billings to Helen Durnan, 06 May 2003:
“In London last week I had a couple of hours spare and called into the National Archives at Kew (where all Great War anoraks like myself hang out) and I found your great uncle’s records on microfilm.
He joined the territorial army on 9th March 1914 (ie before the war) when he was 17 yrs11m of age, 5'5” tall, weighing 120lbs and with a 32.5" chest. He was a grinder by trade and lived at 79 Harworth St in the parish of Grimethorpe.
He didn’t go out to France until 13th April 1915, was wounded on 1st Aug 1915 and came home, but rejoined his battalion on 26th Sept. In 1916 he was deprived 5 days pay for not being in possession of a shirt and another 3 days pay on a separate occasion for losing clothing. (Must have been a forgetful bloke).
He was wounded again on 3rd July 1916 and died of his wounds on 5th July.
The Battle of the Somme started on 1st July, his battalion war diary shows on the 3rd July they were in Thiepval Wood (Somme) in support and were shelled during the day… 93 other ranks (non-officers) were wounded. So it looks like the dysentry tale is wrong and he was more likely wounded by enemy shelling during the Battle of the Somme."
